If I Rolled My Eyes Any Harder, I'd Swallow Them

The Chronicle's (or should I say Michael Bauer's) Top 100 list was published today.

*Sigh.*

I'm pleased to see many of my favorites there, but I have to say that the way-past-it's-glory-days Sushi Ran has no business being there when Sebo and Kiss (not to mention Minako) are not, nor do I understand how Betelnut manages to remain there. Don't even get me started on the well prepared but oh-so-pedestrian Bistro Aix. It's as if there is some rule that 20% of the list must be comprised of restaurants in the Marina. And for fuck's sake, people, there are much better taquerias out there than La Taqueria! Many of them. I seriously think the staff hasn't set foot in another taqueria since they started the list twelve years ago.

But I suppose I'm just one of those online amateurs having a free for all right now, so don't take my word for it. Eat there yourselves and get back to me.

Disappointed is the word of the day, kids.

Betelnut!
Ha ha ha ha.
Yep. I got some old newspaper restaurant review stories I could tell, but it'd have to be in person over a beer.
(PS: Kokkari? Shudder. There's a good tale in that one. Interested?)

Huh? Have you been to Sushi Ran lately? It's fantastic. Yoshi has made some changes over the last year, and it's as wonderful as ever.

Cookie -- where you are concerned, I am always interested.

Coyote -- Yes, I was there about 2 months ago and I have to say that nothing there wow-ed me in the least. I didn't find it any better than most good (but not great) sushi places in the area. Check out Sebo and you'll see what I mean.

hmm i went to kokkari for the first time this year.by mistake becasue Coi was closed on the day after new year and it was the first place we came to that was open. I found it to be unsophisticated.

I couldn't agree more. The Top 100 seems to get increasingly antiquated as the years go by, so much so, that I just find myself laughing when I read over it, rather than taking it seriously as a trusted resource on dining.

La Taqueria might be the biggest joke of them all, but there are so many jokes on there, it's hard to choose!

I'm with you. Some joints on the list get a big WTF from me.
